Steer clear of these dangerous electric car charging methods at home
Throughout the UK, electric vehicles are steadily emerging as a popular personal transport option. Indeed, recent data found that UK electric car registrations have jumped from just 3,500 in 2013 to over 214,000 as of last month. But while electric vehicles are certainly becoming a more attractive, eco-friendly option within the new car market, they still carry significant risks.
Specifically, plug-in vehicles can cause major health and safety concerns if they aren’t charged properly. And poor charging practices are all too common. Recent statistics revealed that 75 per cent of UK electric car owners are resorting to unsafe vehicle charging methods at home, risking electrocution, fire hazards and death. Don’t let your dangerous car charging practices cause a disaster. Use these tips to stay safe with the charging cable:
- Be careful with extension leads—Avoid using a domestic multi-socket extension lead when charging your car. If you must use an extension lead, be sure it’s suitable for outdoor use (eg a reel cable). In addition, never plug more than one extension lead into another (known as ‘daisy-chaining’), as this greatly increases the risk of electrical fire and shock.
- Purchase proper cables—Only buy a charging cable from a reputable seller or directly from your vehicle’s manufacturer. Regularly check your cable for any damage and replace it if necessary.
- Ensure safe charging points—It’s crucial to use a safe charging point at home, such as a dedicated wall box. If you are charging from a 13A mains socket in your home, have the wiring checked on your property.
